eBay.ph Now Charging Fees
I recently got an iPod Nano 8GB 3rd Gen which I decided to sell at eBay.ph since I already have an old 60gb iPod and a Sansa Clip. It’s been quite a while since I last posted an item in eBay.ph so imagine my surprise when I found out that they already started charging for their service, more so since I haven’t heard anyone mention eBay charging fees already.
You can still list your items for free but eBay.ph is now charging for “extra services”. For example if you use the “Buy Now” feature you get charged P1.50, if you’d like your listing to stand out by having it highlighted by a border then you have to shell out an additional P60. And having your item featured in the home page of eBay.ph costs a whopping P600. Check out the complete list of “extra features” and their costs here.
According to their website payments may be made via credit card (guess Paypal isn’t an option yet) and non-payee’s will have their account suspended:
Making payments
You can make a payment at any time by going to the Seller Account section in My eBay. You will be able to pay for your seller fees by making a one-time payment with your credit card (Visa or MasterCard).
Your payment due date
You’ll need to pay your invoice balance in full each month to keep your account current. If you don’t keep your account current, your account may be suspended for non-payment and you may be responsible for collection costs. The payment due date is determined by the date eBay generates your invoice (either the 15th of the month or the last day of the month). For information on payment requirements, late fees, and payment schedules, see Your Payment Due Date.
All in all I think the current scheme is a fair tradeoff. Casual sellers like me can still list their items for free while serious sellers can take advantage of extra services albeit for an extra fee.
We did a post on eBay, and how they monetize and abuse sellers. Once they know they have the market, it won’t be long before you see similar things.

Well if you’re posting for free then I think it’s OK if eBay tries to find other ways to earn money (including ads on your post) but once you pay for their service then I think it’s only fair that they refrain from using all those other money earning schemes… Wonder when the our local version of eBay will start implementing those “features”…
Soon probably, seeing as they have an almost monopoly on the market.
