Budget airline Jetblue has equipped one of their airplanes with wifi so that passengers can access their email and IM via Yahoo and wifi equipped Blackberry devices.

Passengers won’t be able to surf the full Web. But if they bring Wi-Fi-equipped laptops along, they can access lightweight versions of Yahoo e-mail and instant messaging services; BlackBerry owners who have Wi-Fi-enabled handsets (the BlackBerry 8820 and BlackBerry Curve 8320) will be able to access their personal and corporate e-mail. BlackBerry models that have only cellular connections rather than Wi-Fi won’t be compatible–the Federal Communications Commission still has a ban on cellular service in-flight

 

I don’t know about you but do we really want to be connected and accessible anywhere all the time ? It’s nice that we can have something to do to alleviate the boredom in airplanes or that business people can access their emails but there is a certain comfort in knowing that you are (kind of) isolated from the outside world inside a plane. Now we have to deal with all those annoying “You have a message…” audio prompts.

Right now it’s just email and IM, but it’s likely this will expand to cellphones or VOIP devices then the shit will really hit the fan. The thought of blabbermouths constantly yakking on the phone should send shivers up any weary traveler’s spine. Yeah, airplanes will probably have guidelines on turning off sounds on these devices but if my experience with movie theaters is any guide this all for naught as assholes don’t know how to follow them.

You know what would be cool ? If airplanes could install a voting device on each passenger seat.  We vote on which passenger is the most annoying, then if say someone get’s 80% of the votes his seat gets ejected from the plane. The tribe has spoken, you have been eliminated…
